Buddhism

This is just a quick introduction to the beliefs of Buddhism, there's LOADS more important stuff if we had the space!

Buddhism focuses on personal spiritual development and achieving an understanding of yourself and the world around you. It's different to most other religions because it doesn't focus on the relationship between people and a God.

  • Buddhism is about 2,500 years old and it was started in India by Siddhartha Gautama.
  • Buddhists believe that the path to Enlightenment or Buddhahood is through practising and developing morality, meditation and wisdom. Achieving Enlightenment means reaching a kind of freedom, with happiness and wisdom.
  • All life is interconnected in Buddhism so compassion is an important and natural part of the faith.
  • They also believe that change is always possible and that nothing is permanent.
  • Buddhists don't believe in a God or heaven and hell. However they are tolerant of people with different beliefs.
  • Karma (like destiny) is an important part of Buddhist belief. It means that everything we do has a consequence and so if we do something good then something good will happen to us (and the same with bad stuff).
  • Buddhists also believe in rebirth (reincarnation). It means that when we die our consciousness continues and finds another form to continue in.
  • Buddhists don't exactly worship Buddha. The teachings of Buddha are followed to achieve Enlightenment.
