Spirituality

Spirituality covers it all...religion, tradition, faith and beliefs.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Ireland today is a diverse and exciting mix of religions and cultures.

You might have been brought up to believe in one particular faith, you might have discovered religion for yourself or you might not follow any particular religion but want to know what all the fuss is about.

This section talks about why we should learn to love diversity, the main religions in Ireland and we hear YOUR opinion on mixed religion relationships.

Religion and YOU:

"Yes, I believe in God, but I don't go to mass to often. I try to pray as much
as I can". - James, 24

"I was never brought up with any religious beliefs, so I don't really believe
in God, or anything else, I just live life and see what happens". - Claire, 18

"I was brought up as a Catholic but never pushed into going to mass or praying. I believe in God but not with the practices of the Catholic church and their attitudes to stuff like women priests, abortion, divorce and so on. I think they need to modernise A LOT if they want to get young people to return to their faith". - Jenny, 25

"No, I don't believe in any of it. The Church was and still is a way to give power and richness to certain people. Why would any God support that"? - Mark, 19

"Yes, my mother and granny brought me up to go to mass and pray. It has  definitely helped me through some really tough times".- Sinead, 21

"No, I'm not very religious, well I do believe there's a God, but going to
mass really annoys me. I don't like the way it is practiced".- Mari-Sophie 27

"I practice Buddhism, it's really helping me to find myself".- Hannah, 21

"Some of the catholic rules are a bit strict. I am Christian but I don't believe in not having sex before marriage. I don't believe in not using contraception either". - Jane, 23

Most religons today have their roots in ancient beliefs, that modern religous institutions have branded as 'pagan', and blasphemous, obviously to undermine the old ways of comprehending the universe beyond our reach. They were/are controlled by powerful organisations that have survived through indoctrination, telling you what's what, and what isn't, and fear, telling you you will burn in hell if you believe otherwise. The age we live in now delivers powerful information freely, giving people a choice of beliefs, making us less 'faithful'. The essence at the core of all religons is harmony in/with life. We are born, we live, we die. 'God' is just telling us to accept that and get on with it. Religons are the supermarkets for spirituality, each delivering their own brand, unfortunately bereft of quality in an age where competition is rife. Should we be creating our own religous brands again, with that simple essence at the core for all, a bit like going back to nature and putting some quality back on the table, and true reality in our lives, as opposed to the convenient crap we continually devour, and then complain about....? Choice is the new religon, arm yourself with knowledge, then try and make the right choices, ones that contribute to harmony.

I recently lost my cousin in a car accident and after a long session of soul searching I finally understand and believe that God exists. It comforts me to know that she is in Heaven and happy. It would hurt to think otherwise.

I think if you really want to find God, he will be found by you. Louise

All religions seem to me to be misguided faiths based on one simple truth. I don't believe people can truely comprehend God, and trying seems sort of useless. Chris, age 16
