A lot of people don't really understand what sexuality is all about. Unfortunately, there is loads of prejudice surrounding sexuality. Here, SpunOut.ie busts some of those myths!

LGBT people are promiscuous, they sleep around and aren’t faithful. FALSE

This is not true and it is also prejudiced. A gay or bisexual person is just as likely to have a lasting, faithful relationship as anyone else. We all know plenty of heterosexual people who do the dirt on their boyfriend or girlfriend so don’t try blaming the gay or bisexual community.

If I have sex with someone who’s gay or bisexual, I’m more likely to catch an STI. FALSE

If you have unprotected sex with ANYONE you’re at risk of catching a sex infection. Your partner might be straight but have an STI or your partner might have slept with both men and women and be clean of infections. Always use condoms if you’re having sex or oral sex with a man and always use mouth barriers if you’re having sex or oral sex with a girl.

It’s all about image and being cool. Gay and bisexual people can choose to be straight if they want. FALSE

We don’t choose who we fancy or whether to be straight, gay or bisexual.

Bisexual people like boys and girls equally. FALSE

If you are bisexual you might realise that you fancy one sex more or that at different times in your life you tend to fancy only boys or only girls. You also might only have relationships with one sex but still feel attracted to the other. Everybody’s sexuality is different and who cares so long as we enjoy it!

If men dress as women they are gay. FALSE

Just because someone is a cross-dresser or transvestite doesn’t mean they are gay. Many straight people cross dress.

There’s something wrong with men who dress as women. FALSE

David Beckham, Brad Pitt, David Bowie: they’ve all dabbled in wearing women’s clothes and make up.
