When is the right time to have sex?

A few things to ask yourself.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

The decision to have sex comes with responsibility, consequences… and don’t forget - pleasure! It’s a decision that should not be made lightly or without the right information about everything from pregnancies to sexually transmitted infections. Keep in mind that one ‘oops’ incident can affect you for the rest of your life. And, by the same token, one ‘oooh my Gooooood, wow!’ experience, can also affect you for the rest of your life! Sex is so much more than contraception and intercourse; it’s important to enjoy the journey too!

Here are a few things to ask yourself:

Why are you having sex?

Are you having sex because ‘everyone’s’ supposedly at it? Are you having sex because you want to make a commitment to someone? Does curiosity and raging hormones have you dying to get some action? Whatever your reasons, make sure you’re happy with them.

Are you being pressured into having sex?

If you feel like you’re being pressured into having sex, it may be best to consider holding off for a while until you’re comfortable. If the other person can’t respect that, then it’s a sure sign they don’t respect you. You deserve only the best. Remember, there is no rush!

How will you feel the next day?

Okay, so it’s hard to look into the crystal ball, especially with the cloud of hormones swirling everything around, but ask yourself - will you regret your decision or will you be bouncing all over the place with the look of satisfaction? If you think you’re likely to feel bad, trust your gut instinct. You have the right to just say no. It’s your first experience at sex and you should do it when you’re ready and at a time and place where you can enjoy it too. You’ll know it’s right when you know it’s right.

Are you clued up about contraception and STI’s?

If you’re taking the pill do you know when your ‘safe period is’? Do you know what to do if you miss a pill? What the hell happens if a condom bursts? (All this info can be found on the Spunout.ie website!)

There’s no shame in having sex and there’s no shame in not having sex. If you feel you are ready, then be careful and just enjoy the experience. It’s a big step in your life and one that should be savoured!
