Trichomoniasis

Condoms are the ONLY form of contraceptive that protects against sexual infections.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Trichomoniasis  or Trich (as it’s often called) is a common infection caused by a small parasite that irritates the urinary tract and vagina. It can cause Urinary Tract and vaginal infections.

Trich is normally spread by unprotected sex but can sometimes be caught from infected clothing or a towel.

What are the symptoms?

  • Men often have no symptoms and women sometimes have none either.

  • A woman might have a foamy, offensive smelling yellow, green or brown discharge (liquid) from the vagina.
  • A man might have a rash on his penis.
  • The area around the vagina can itch, sex can be painful and peeing can cause pain or burning.

  • If men have symptoms they might feel pain when peeing and have a thin white or green discharge (liquid) from the penis.

What treatment can you get?

Visit your doctor to have Trich diagnosed. The infection can be treated with antibiotics. Do not have sex without a condom until the infection has cleared. Your partner and recent partners should also be treated. If Trich is not treated it can lead to problems in pregnancy such as premature labour and low birth weight.

How can you prevent Trichomoniasis?

Always use a condom during sex. Remember that a man can have Trich without showing any symptoms.
