Pubic Lice (Crabs)
Condoms are the ONLY form of contraceptive that protects against sexual infections.
Pubic lice or crabs are small lice that live in the pubic hair around the vagina or penis.
What are the symptoms?
- Pubic Lice cause an intense itching in the area around the vagina or penis and lice or small nits (eggs) might be seen on pubic hair. The itching normally starts within two to three weeks of being infected with lice.
- You might feel run down or irritable.
- They are spread from close body contact during sex or foreplay and can sometimes pass by sharing clothes or bedding. Men can get pubic lice in their beards (for example, through oral sex).
What treatment can you get?
Visit your doctor to have Pubic Lice diagnosed. He/ she will prescribe a special shampoo, cream or spray to clear up the infection. Wash all your clothing and bed clothes as soon as you are diagnosed. You can also buy over the counter treatments in most pharmacies. Your partner and recent partners should also be treated.
How can you prevent Pubic Lice/ Crabs?
If you have sexual contact with a partner who has pubic lice then you will probably catch the infection. The best way to prevent this is by limiting your number of sexual partners. Condoms do not protect against catching pubic lice/crabs.
