Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Condoms are the ONLY form of contraceptive that protects against sexual infections.

PID is NOT an STI but it is an infection that happens as a result of some STIs.

This is a serious infection that infects a woman's reproductive system. It can cause infertility (not being able to have a child), serious pain or ectopic pregnancy. PID is caused by untreated STIs and having sex without a condom but it can also follow miscarriage, abortion or having a child. The STIs most likely to cause this infection are Gonorrhea and Chlamydia but it may also be caused by bacterial vaginosis and other infections.

What are the symptoms?

There are two types of PID: acute and chronic. Acute PID is extremely painful, chronic PID might only cause mild pain.

  • You might suffer from pain during sex, a sore stomach or back area, have a fever or feel sick.
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge.
  • Your periods can be painful, irregular or heavy. You might also have blood staining and pain between periods or when you pee.

What treatment can you get?

Visit your doctor to have PID diagnosed. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, rest and avoiding sex until the infection is fully treated. In severe cases, surgery might be needed.

How can you prevent Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?

Have safer sex - condoms protect against picking up STIs, which can cause PID. Treat any STIs  early.
