Mouth barriers
How to protect yourself when giving oral sex.
Many people think that oral sex is a completely safe activity and that STI’s cannot be transmitted during it. Sadly however, certain types of STI’s can be transmitted, depending on a variety of factors. For example, oral sex is considered unsafe when a woman is having her period or has a vaginal infection, as she can transmit STI’s to her partner via her blood and vaginal discharge. Oral sex without barriers is less risky than penetrative sex without barriers; however it is not risk free. Diseases that can be contracted through oral sex include HIV, Herpes, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea, Hep A and Genital Warts.
So, to be totally safe it is recommend that people use mouth barriers.
What are mouth barriers?
Month barriers are basically anything that protects the mouth when giving oral sex. Condoms are made of strong materials such as latex, and they can be used to cover the penis during oral sex. Dental dams are thin sheets also made of latex and they can be used to cover the vagina during oral sex. Be aware that dental dams are harder to source than condoms.
How do they work?
They basically act as a barrier and prevent direct contact between the penis/vagina and a person’s mouth or tongue, thus reducing the risk of transmitting any STI’s.
Where do you get them?
Condoms are well known and are sold in chemists, supermarkets and online. They can also be gotten free at places like Dublin AIDS Alliance. Make sure the condoms have a kite mark and are in date before buying. Dental dams are available in some sex shops and can also be purchased online.
