Gonorrhea
Condoms are the ONLY form of contraceptive that protects against sexual infections.
This is a bacterial infection in the area of the penis and vagina, throat or bum. Gonorrhea can cause infertility in men and women.
Gonorrhea is spread by sex, anal sex and oral sex without using a condom or is passed from a woman to her baby during birth which may cause serious infections, such as a very serious sticky eye.
What are the symptoms?
- Women often have no symptoms. Up to 50% have only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
- Women might feel pain during sex, vaginal discharge (liquid), burning when peeing or lower abdominal pain.
- Men might have no symptoms but most men will.
- Men's symptoms include a watery or thick liquid from the penis or bum, pain when peeing or pain in the testicles (balls).
- Some symptoms that can occur, but only very rarely are arthritis, infection of the heart & skin lesions.
What treatment can you get?
Visit your doctor to have Gonorrhea diagnosed. The illness can be treated with antibiotics and blood tests. Your partner and recent partners should also be treated. It is important not to have sex until after the treatment is complete.
