Bacterial Vaginosis
Condoms are the ONLY form of contraceptive that protects against sexual infections.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is an infection that women get when bacteria in the vagina cause irritation. It's not a true STI so you can get it without having sex.
Having unprotected sex doesn't always cause BV but women who are having sex are at higher risk. Most women get BV at some point. The infection is thought to increase the risk of HIV infection, premature delivery, miscarriage, low birth weight for babies and pelvic inflammatory disease.
What are the symptoms?
- You might have a strong, unpleasant vaginal smell.
- You might have an unusual vaginal discharge or liquid.
- Many women do not have any symptoms.
What treatment can you get?
Visit your doctor to have the infection diagnosed. If you have BV he/she will probably prescribe a cream or tablets to clear the problem.
How can you prevent BV?
Using condoms is the best way to protect against BV through sexual intercourse.
