Sexual Lube

How to keep things wet and wild.

What is Sexual lubrication?

Whenever a woman is aroused or turned on, she secretes fluid from her vagina. This fluid is designed to make sex feel comfortable and enjoyable. The fluid is produced naturally, but sometimes a woman may be drier than she would like. This takes the fun out of sex and can even make it painful. So, sometimes people need to use lubricative jellies or creams.

Why you might need some extra help:

  • If you are going through any kind of hormonal change - Going on or coming off the pill may change things. Also, some prescription meds can interfere with wetness. Ask your doc if you have noticed problems after starting on a new medication. The patient leaflet that comes with the medicine may also include a list of side effects.
  • Lack of foreplay – Your partner may not understand that women need time to warm up before sex.
  • Certain times of the month – Some women may find that they feel drier during certain parts of their cycle, such as the week after their period or the week before it.
  • Alcohol – Too much alcohol can be drying for certain individuals.
  • If you are having anal sex - The anus does not produce any lubricating fluids, so you need to use lubrication.

How to use it:

  • You can buy lubricants in chemists or supermarkets. If you are shy, you cans also buy them online.
  • As well as the usual lubricants, you can buy flavoured and coloured lubes.
  • There are two types of lubricants, oil based and water based. Water based lubes are safe to use with condoms, but many contain glycerine which may be irritating to some women. The oil based lubricants cannot be used with condoms, which is why they are less popular and only suitable for monogamous couples with a clean bill of health. They also tend to be very messy and many couples just do not like them.
  • Many men find the adding a blob of jelly to the inside of a condom adds to the sensation.
  • You can apply the jelly anytime you like, but it is probably best to apply it after you have had at least 10-15 minutes of foreplay. You simply squeeze out a blob and apply it to the outside and/or inside of the vagina.
  • You may find the jelly cold at first, so perhaps warm it in your hands beforehand.

How to overcome the shyness factor of buying lube:

  • Realise that shop keepers sell all sorts of things daily. Your lube is just another item to be checked out by them along with tampons and incontinence pads.
  • Figure out what you are gonna buy beforehand, so you don’t have to hang ‘round the lube/condom/sexual health area for a long time.
  • Buy a few others things such as deodorant, facial wipes, shampoo etc. and lump your lube in with the rest. You might not feel as self conscious if you are buying loads of other things at the same time. Buy stuff you need though, there’s no sense in wasting money!
  • The machines in public toilets usually sell condoms, but some larger ones may also sell lube.
  • Go to a chemist/shop that is far from where you live/know anyone.
  • Buy lube online. Make sure to use a reputable website and that the https:// symbol is displayed when you are putting in your credit or debit card details.
  • Pay with cash. This way you avoid the whole pin number/machine timewaster and minimise time spent at the cash register.
  • Recognise that many people are sexually active and it is a normal and natural part of life. You are not doing anything wrong or hurting anyone.
