Vaginal Ring
This is a small, clear plastic ring that contains two hormones: oestrogen and progestogen (the same as the combined pill).
The vaginal ring does NOT protect against sexual infections.
The vaginal ring is a combined hormonal contraceptive method ,which consists of a small flexible, transparent, plastic ring. The ring contains the hormones oestrogen and progestogen, similar to the ones found in combined oral contraceptives (the pill).
You insert the vaginal ring into the vagina yourself. The ring is left in place for three consecutive weeks. During this time, the ring releases a low dose of hormones which prevent pregnancy by stopping the release of a mature egg (ovulation).
After three weeks, you remove the ring to make way for a menstrual period. This is followed by one week without the vaginal ring before a new ring is inserted for another three weeks.
There is only one type available at the moment, called NuvaRing.
Advantages of the vaginal ring:
- You don't have to remember to use it every day.
- It doesn't have to be fitted by a doctor.
- If you are vomiting or have diarrhoea it doesn't affect the contraceptive, unlike the pill. You can wear it when swimming, exercising or showering.
- It has the same advantages as the combined contraceptive pill.
However:
- It doesn't protect against sexual infections.
- You need to feel comfortable about inserting the ring in your vagina.
- It has the same disadvantages as the combined contraceptive pill.
- The vaginal ring is more expensive than taking a contraceptive pill.
