Implants

Remember: Implants do NOT protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Article by : SpunOut.ie - Rating :

Implants do NOT protect against sexually transmitted infections.  Only condoms protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Implants are small tubes fitted under your upper arm skin that release the synthetic hormone progestogen into your blood for five years. At present the only implant available in Ireland is Implanon, which offers three years protection.

A doctor fits implants during your period. The process takes about 10 minutes and is done under local anaesthetic. Implants are almost 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Advantages of Implants:

  • There are no serious health risks
  • You can breastfeed with an implant.
  • They can be removed at any time without effecting fertility afterwards.

However:

  • Implants don’t protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • They often cause irregular periods during the first year.
  • There can be side effects such as acne (spots), weight gain and tender breasts.
  • You can feel the implants under your skin and sometimes see them.
