- Find out about a new date. Ask others who know or have dated the person. Date with friends before accepting a single date. Make definite plans in advance. Don't leave a group setting with a person you don't know well.
- If you are on a date alone with someone, stay in public areas with other people near by.
- Tell someone you trust where you are going and when you expect to return. Make this obvious to your date.
- You do not have to accept unwanted sexual attention. You have the right to set your own limits and change these limits over time or with different people.
- Be assertive. Say what you really want and are feeling. Remember alcohol and other drugs compromise your ability to make decisions.
- When you say "no" make your message clear. When you say "yes", be sure you know what you are agreeing to. Don't be embarrassed to yell, make a scene or run away. Don't worry about offending your "date".
- Limit your use of alcohol and drugs. They reduce your ability to think clearly and make sound decisions.
- If you are uncomfortable with a date, you can choose to end it. Make your own travel arrangements and/or meet at the destination. Carry money for a phone call or fare home. Avoid parties where men greatly outnumber women. Don't accept lifts from newly made acquaintances.
- Be aware of anyone who is domineering or manipulative, who attempts to impose his/ her will on you, or who shows a lack of respect for your feelings.
- Trust your feelings. If you feel pressured or uneasy, examine the relationship closely.
- Take care of yourself - don't assume other people will take care of you or protect you from harm.
