A few myths about sex
Well, I heard...
It’s amazing how many rumours about sex are floating around out there! What’s even more shocking is how many people believe them! Here are some of the top sex myths de-mystified. When you have the facts about sex you have the power to keep yourself safe and enjoy the ride all the more with your peace of mind!
It’s not possible to get pregnant your first time.
FALSE! Unprotected sex can get you knocked up from the first to the last time you ever have intercourse. Young teens and grannies alike, beware!
You can’t get pregnant on your period.
FALSE! Girls can indeed get pregnant on their period. It only takes one determined wee sperm to make it happen! This sperm can be present in pre-cum (the clear, sticky drops that are released when he's aroused).
You can’t get pregnant if he doesn’t ejaculate.
FALSE! Again, look out for pre-cum fluid! It only takes one sperm to get you pregnant, and pre-cum can also contain sexually transmitted infections. Some lads aren't aware that they are ejaculating until it's too late, and it's easy to get carried away when caught up in the moment.
If you have sex standing up, in the shower or if you pee afterwards- you can’t get pregnant.
FALSE! Even if you have sex standing upside down in the ocean, you can get pregnant. (Nice image, huh?)
Sex will fix a broken relationship or bring two people closer.
FALSE! This also is not necessarily true, despite the shattered expectations of billions of people who have had sex under this hope and assumption. Whilst sex can bring people closer, this is usually only the case if both partners are happy and enthusiastic about having sex. Remember, for some people, sex can be a purely physical experience, no deep emotions and bonding involved. If your heart is opening along with your trousers, be sure the other person feels the same or you may end up hurt.
The earth will move my first time.
Hmmm… most likely, FALSE, but you never know! Maybe some furniture will rattle, but whilst sex is enjoyable and fun, like everything else, it takes a little practise. Neither partner may experience a mind-blowing, earth-moving experience, especially at first. But, have fun exploring one another’s bodies and learning how to turn each other on. You’ll be rockin one another’s worlds in no time as you learn which buttons to press at just the right time.
All guys hate wearing condoms.
This isn’t true. The only guy who won’t wear a condom is one who doesn’t have respect for you and will risk you catching an STI or getting pregnant.
If the condom breaks, you’re screwed.
FALSE! Well it’s definitely a mood spoiler, but there are emergency contraception steps you can take. For ladies in this situation, seek emergency contraception immediately, even if the split happened before your partner ejaculated. The morning after pill must be started within 72 hours of sex. The IUD (coil) must be fitted within five days after sex. Both are available from your GP or GUM clinic. For lads, help your partner seek out the above emergency contraception options. You both may want to see about an STI check as well.
He/she will know exactly what I like.
FALSE! Everybody has different turn on’s and off’s, so help your partner (and your pleasure levels) out by telling them or guiding their hands or mouth in the right direction. If that’s a little too direct for you, a few sighs or moans when your partner is doing something you like will make them feel like a star and you possibly seeing stars- enjoy!
