Romance

What makes romance turn from sweet (aaawww) to tipping the cringe factor (eurgh)?

The problem with romance is that what one person finds romantic, another person may find a complete turn off. There are no definite rules for romance and you can only learn as you go along. However, there are some simple guidelines that you can follow:

  • Romance can be simple, and should not be judged by how much money you spend. For example, spontaneously picking up your other half from work and cooking them dinner is a lovely romantic gesture. As is making a CD of their favourite songs.
  • Instead of going for traditional red roses, aftershave or chocolates as a gift, how about doing something a little creative? Find out what the other person really likes: a gift of their favourite flowers, an evening spent doing something they love, making something unique for them, a gift that reflects their personality or taking an interest in their hobby – be it dancing or rugby!
  • It’s always nice to go out for a meal, but doing something different every once and a while can really help in the romance stakes. Think about planning a date with a difference such as the theatre, getting outdoors, trying a new sport or catching a live band.
  • Beware of making huge romantic gestures unless you’re certain it’s the right time. Proposing to someone may seem to be the most romantic thing that you can do, but make sure that you correctly judge the intensity of the relationship before jumping into such a big commitment as marriage. If you have only been going out for a few weeks, the chances are that a proposal will scare the other person off.

Romance Do’s

  • Make an effort.
  • Make the other person feel special.
  • Be creative- don’t always stick to the same old routine.
  • Try to surprise them and be spontaneous.
  • Give them your complete attention.
  • Compliment them on what they’re wearing or how they look (remember, lads appreciate a compliment just as much as girls do!)

Romance Don’ts

  • Cooking your other half dinner and switching on the TV to catch Desperate Housewives or a football match is NOT romantic. (Don’t even try to convince them other wise).
  • Inviting your mates along when your other half expects a romantic evening for two.
  • Answering your phone or texting someone during a romantic moment is a big no no- it’s always good to give the other person your complete attention.
  • Making a fuss about the bill and who pays what. It’s such a turnoff when someone is really tight with money.
  • Getting drunk and embarrassing your date by serenading them on karaoke.
  • Buying them underwear. (I shouldn't have to explain this one)
  • Calling them by your ex’s name, or worse again your mums!
  • Spending your time eyeing up someone else.
