Thoughts on dates

Opinion: There is nothing worse than a bad first date.

In my humble opinion, the biggest no no for a first date is the cinema. Why you ask? Well the first and most obvious issue is that you spend two hours sitting in silence beside someone who you want to get to know better - I mean, the cinema is not exactly the best place for a stimulating conversation! Then, there is the whole awkwardness of who pays, do you hold hands and what do you do if the guy lunges at you for a kiss mid movie? Plus, you might not have yet made up your mind if you like him yet, and you won’t have had much of a chance to make any decision on the matter in the darkness of a cinema theatre!

Also, if the guy is in any way scabby he mightn’t feel like going for a drink after paying twenty euro for a film, especially if it was bad. I’m all for equality and I would never expect my boyfriend to pay for everything, but on a first date the guy should do the spending. After all, he asked you out. Only on date number two is it okay to split the bill.

The cinema for date number two is also acceptable. At least at that stage you have some sort of idea if you like the person you are sitting beside. I don't really like going for food on the first date either, but that’s just me. It's immensely difficult to look attractive and endearing with a messy burger or pizza hanging out of your mouth.

I think a few drinks in a nice pub that you're familiar with can break the ice. Bear in mind that getting drunk on a first date probably isn't the best idea. Going to the zoo is another good option for a date.

Once the ice has been broken on the first date, the following dates are easier. A simple walk in the park on a sunny day with someone you like can be ten times better than an expensive dinner out. So boys, listen up: if you want to make it to the second date, don't suggest the cinema for the first.
