Suicide bereavement

Give yourself time to grieve and ask for help if you need it.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

If someone you know or care for has died by suicide, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions and pain. You might feel grief, disbelief, in shock or denial, confusion, panic, anger, guilt or wanting to blame someone.

  • It’s important to give yourself time to grieve and to ask for help if you need it.

  • Think about why it happened but remember that you might have to live without knowing all the answers.

  • You might feel overwhelmed by pain and sorrow, even to the point of suicidal thoughts. This is common and your feelings will calm with time. (If you are at risk of suicide or self harm, you should immediately contact your local doctor or go to the A&E department of the nearest hospital. The doctors and hospitals in your area will be listed in the Golden Pages: www.goldenpages.ie.)
  • You might feel angry at the person, everybody else, God or yourself.

  • Share your feelings with a friend who will listen and support you. Let yourself cry.

  • Talk to friends, family, or one of the support organisations listed below, to help you get through the pain of a suicide.
