Mandatory Essential Drivers Training

Get this to get on the road.

On the 4th April 2011, the RSA introduced a new Essential Driver Training scheme for learner drivers. If you have been issued with your first learner permit after this date, then you are obligated to take this course before sitting your driving test.

This course is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme.

Studies show that young drivers and inexperienced drivers are more likely to die or be seriously injured in collisions, and EDT is one of several measures introduced by the RSA to help improve critical driving knowledge, skills and behaviours of new drivers.

If you are not required to complete the EDT, you may still choose to take an EDT course, as it can help increase your chances of passing the driving test and will help make you a safer driver.

What does the course involve?

The course consists of 12 one hour lessons, which cover various driving skills. After each lesson, your driving instructor will record your progress in a logbook.

You will also have a sponsor; an experienced driver who will practice with you and supervise your driving in your own time. This sponsor will also track your progress in the logbook.

Cost:

There is no set free for the course and prices vary from centre to centre.

How to locate an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor):

The EDT can only be delivered by an RSA approved instructor, so check out the ADI register for some local instructors.
