If you are attacked
Use these kick ass moves if trouble finds you!
Firstly it’s good for everyone to learn self-defence. These courses are widely available and will teach you how to protect yourself if attacked. If you are proficient in such techniques, they are very effective. But proficiency requires practice. So go join a class!
There are several ways to try and stop someone threatening or attacking you:
- Try to calm down the attacker. Try to persuade him/ her not to carry out the attack.
- Claim to be sick or pregnant. Say you have a sexually transmitted disease. This may intimidate the attacker.
- Try to discourage him. Pretend to faint, cry hysterically, and act insane.
- If you are threatened or attacked at home, say that you are expecting somebody (your father, husband, boyfriend) to arrive.
Alternatively if this isn't working try the following:
- Yelling can surprise or frighten an attacker away if he/she fears people will come to help you. This also shows the attacker that you aren't afraid to fight back and is likely to alert others that you are in danger.
- Shout at the attacker to stop; scream and use your body to make the NO message clear. Push them away, kick, bite and do everything you can to make them stop. Struggling and forcing back may discourage an attacker, but most will retaliate and have the potential to inflict serious injuries. However, you must not be afraid to hurt an attacker. All kicks and blows must be forceful and should be aimed at vulnerable areas such as the groin, eyes or instep.
- If someone grabs you and you can't beat them with strength, you can by outsmarting them. If they grab your wrist pull your wrist back so your hand is in waving position (palm facing forward) and twist it towards yourself and pull your arm away. It is hard to hold onto wrist bones that are moving in that way. They stumble toward you and you stumble back so you can use that momentum to bring the same out and backhand them with your knuckles in the forehead, nose or teeth.
- If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper thigh.
- When the attacker puts their hands up to you, grab their first few fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible with.
