- If you drive, always have your keys ready and in your hand so that you can get in the car quickly if you need to.
- Always carry a mobile in your car, but don’t use it while you are driving, as it is illegal to do so. If you want to talk in the car, you can use a hands free headset.
- Make sure you are fully insured and that your tax is up to date. The LAST thing you need if you are in an accident is worries over insurance.
- Keep your car in good condition.
- Before you drive off check that you have at least a quarter of petrol in your tank, enough water and enough oil. Also, regularly inspect your car for damage to the electrics, the wipers and the lights.
- Check the air pressure of your tyres regularly.
- Learn to change a tyre so that you’re never left stranded with a flat wheel.
- Speed is the main cause of road accidents in Ireland as stopping time sharply decreases with speed. It is a lot easier to brake at 30 mph than it is at 100 mph.
- If you have an accident or are stuck in an isolated or unsafe place, call the Gardaí or police for help.
- If you are driving with a child under the age of three, he/she must be placed in a child’s car seat or booster seat. Children over the age of three must wear seat belts.
- Don’t drive if you are tired. According to research in the UK, 40% of fatal road accidents are linked to fatigue. If you are tired, there is a real danger of losing concentration. In the worst case scenario, you could actually fall asleep at the wheel.
- Carry an emergency cold weather kit with you. If there is heavy snow or ice, you may end up stranded somewhere and your kit could end up being very useful indeed. The kit should include warm clothing, blanket, a shovel, a radio, snacks, a flask with a hot drink and a torch.
- Don’t trust strangers who seem to be waiting at your car and offer to help you if it’s been damaged. This can be a potential attacker trying to trick you.
- If a stranger tries to get into your car, beep the horn and shout for help. If there’s nobody around get out of the car right away and run for help.
