Organic food

Organic food and drink means that they are free of chemicals.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Foods that are organic have been grown in soil free of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Why should this worry us?

Well, if chemicals have been sprayed on the food you eat then those chemicals enter your body. You don’t need to switch to a totally organic diet but it’s good for you and the environment to buy organic whenever possible. Unfortunately organic food can cost a lot so you might be restricted to buying only some organic stuff in your weekly shopping.

The lowdown on organic food:

  • It is produced without the use of artificial pesticides, chemical treatments and fertilizers.
  • Organic food undergoes as little processing as possible. That means no artificial additives, preservatives or genetically modified (GM) food.
  • Growing organic food is a better choice for farming land, sustaining it in the long term.
  • Organic food is believed to be more nutritious than mass produced stuff.
  • Many people say that organic food is tastier that the rest.

However:

  • Organic food is often more expensive.
  • As there are no artificial preservatives in organic food, it doesn’t stay fresh for as long as chemically treated food types.

Going organic

Buy at least one organic food every week so that you get into the habit.

  • Buy fruit and vegetables that are in season (meaning the time of year they naturally grow). It means they will be cheaper than other choices.
  • Check for farmer’s markets in your area. They often have good value organic products.
  • Try to buy organic food that’s been produced locally. This supports employment in your home area and cuts down on the environmental worries from transporting food long distances.
