Acupuncture
Acupuncture started in China thousands of years ago. The therapy aims to strengthen the mind and body so that you become stronger in resisting illness and disease.
Here comes the complicated bit:
Chinese traditional philosophy believes that our health depends on the body's energy (Qi) flowing smoothly around the body through energy channels (meridians). When the body's energy (Qi) becomes blocked or upset in some way then our health suffers.
So, acupuncture tries to make sure our body's energy is balanced. Fine needles are inserted into the energy channels (meridians) to control the flow of energy or unblock the channels.
- Acupuncture is used to treat loads of health problems including stress, depression, asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure, period pains, back pain, skin problems and addiction (to smoking, alcohol, drugs and so on).
- As acupuncture aims to strengthen your whole health, it can really be used to treat any health problem.
- On a first consultation, an acupuncturist will talk to you in detail about your health and lifestyle to make sure you get suitable treatment.
- Then they will insert very fine needles (you'll not feel them or feel very little) for anything from a few seconds to up to 20 minutes depending on your needs.
- You'll probably feel relaxed during the treatment.
- Some people will have results very quickly while others will need treatment over several months.
- Acupuncture is one of the few alternative treatments officially recognised by the World Health Organisation.
