Why it's good to be broke

Ways to rock empty pockets and have fabulous no money fun!

Article by : SpunOut.ie

We all know that there are serious problems, such as unemployment, arising for many people, however we thought it was time to remember the bright side of life.

Keep an open mind and think about how a thin wallet may be adding quality to your life:

  • We can all get more creative in how we think and what we do. Time to get using our brains people!
  • We can walk past the harassing on-the-street charity collectors without guilt - our pockets really are empty!
  • More quality time with friends and family. Time for us all to get back to basics and hang out with loved ones, enjoying the simple things in life.
  • No pressure to go on foreign hols, to have designer labels, or to have a fancy schmancy car coz we're all skint. Yeehaaaw! There’s also the comfort in no pressure to conform to consumerism...ah what a relief!
  • Milk the new spirit of customer service springing up all of a sudden in shops- “Can I help you mam?” “Hell yeah you can!”
  • Green travel: Leave the car at home, save petrol costs and get out walking and cycling, more fresh air and exercise is always a good thing.
  • Partying at home. Have more fun inviting mates over for movie nights, dinners and drinks – beats going to the pub where you can't hear anyone anyways.
  • Less confusion in the supermarket: No more procrastinating about what fresh herb crust to use on your veal cutlets when you've only got money for spuds!
  • The joy of retro. Root out and rediscover the old games you played – Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit,  old Nintendo and Playstation games, cards, Monopoly...and TWISTER!!
  • Have fun with unique fashion finds in charity shops. Give your style a boost and support charities really in need. Or barter...”I’ll swap you my jeans and a shirt for your jacket!” Everyone has loads of clothes that they loved on purchase but haven’t gotten around to wearing, dig them out, swap and share, and accessorise!
  • Time to get a hold of the money you do have and to spend wiser. It means being surrounded by less unnecessary stuff and buying the essentials only.
  • Get outside and breathe that fresh air. Gym membership out of the budget? Invest in some decent trainers and head outside for a walk, jog or run. Chances are you'll be joined by a new community of recession runners!
  • Time to take a leap of faith.  If your true passion is painting, playing music, making tables, building cars or whatever -now is the time to go for it! Take time out and get creating or doing whatever it is you want to do.
  • The little niggling things about your job or workplace will seem insignificant- you're happy to have a job at all!
  • Having a meal out or even a frothy cappuccino (or whatever cuppa hits your caffeine buzz) will really feel like a treat.
  • Budget trips. Go on road trips and head camping with friends....it may be wet...but deadly craic!
  • The less you have...the less you have to lose.
  • You might realise that work wasn't really helping you to achieve anything you want, other than making some anonymous man rich.
  • You can catch up on years of sleep deprivation.
  • More time for sex!
  • Less change in your pocket gives you a spring in your step.
