Don't let debt get the better of you.

If you are trying to spend less but it isn’t working then keep a daily diary of what you spend. This will help you see exactly where your money is going.
- Remember that “I want” doesn’t mean “I need”.
- Get rid of your credit cards.
- If you tend to spend lots of money on clothes then arrange swap nights with your friends instead.
- If socialising is costing you half your week’s money, then spend more nights in, drink less, smoke less or ask friends round to your place.
- Don’t buy rounds of drink and don’t lend friends money. That might sound harsh but you need to get your own finances sorted before worrying about your mates.
- If food is costing more than you think it should start shopping in the cheapest supermarkets and make sure to cook your own food: it’s much cheaper and healthier than eating take-aways or frozen meals.
- Make a shopping list of what food you’re going to need for the week ahead.
- Never go shopping when you’re hungry. You’ll end up buying junk food and expensive snacks.
- If your car is burning money instead of petrol, check out the price of public transport and see if it would be worthwhile selling the car and heading back to the bus stop.
