Counselling

Information about counselling.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Counselling is a form of treatment that allows you to talk through any emotional worries, fears, feelings or problems in a safe environment with a trained counsellor. Counsellors do not give advice, however they help people find their own answers and learn to manage their own difficulties. Some counsellors will explore skills and techniques that the person can use in their own daily life. Counsellors’ approaches may vary depending on the type of training and level of experience they have.

The counsellor listens and can offer advice on how to work through any problems that you have. Your counsellor should be non judgemental and supportive towards you. Confidentiality should be discussed in the first meeting.

Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a professional about your problems, as they are not emotionally involved (like family and friends.) Counselling isn’t the right form of treatment for everyone- depending on how comfortable you are talking with a stranger. Remember that counsellors deal with these issues everyday.

Counselling can be used as a form of treatment if you are stressed, anxious, mildly depressed, lacking confidence; are experiencing relationship or work/study worries or after a bereavement. However if you have a more serious health problem you should talk to your doctor about whether other treatments are also necessary.
