Beat shyness
Remember that others might be shy too!
It’s difficult to speak out if you’re shy. Maybe you worry about things like “they’ll laugh at me” or “no one will like me”. Maybe you sell yourself short with negative thoughts like “I sound stupid when I speak”. If you are shy you might feel awkward meeting new people or nervous when someone asks you a question and you suddenly become the centre of attention. Shyness can leave you feeling lonely and left out.
The best way to beat shyness is to feel good about yourself:
- Try writing a list of the good stuff in your life (it sounds stupid but it works!). Then, make an effort to meet new people so that you have to fight your shyness and get to know them. Join a club or do some voluntary work. Joining a drama or debating club can really make you face your fears.
- Remember that others might be shy too and need you to start up the conversation.
- If you don’t know the person well, use general topics like music, sport, food, exams or even (only if you’re desperate) the weather. Push ahead with the questions and be nosy!
- Really make an effort to get to know what the other person likes and listen to their answers. (Don’t ignore them while you try to think of the next question).
- Listening well to the other person and concentrating on what they’re saying will help you to stop thinking/worrying about yourself.
