Free eye tests
See what it's all about.
If you have eye problems and need glasses or contacts, you may be entitled to free eye tests under the Treatment Benefit Scheme. This scheme is run by the Department of Social Protection and is available to insured workers and retired people who have made PRSI contributions, as well as many people on different forms of social welfare.
You may qualify for this scheme if you have a medical card or are in receipt of any of the following benefits:
- Invalidity pension
- Career’s allowance
- Illness Benefit
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Jobseeker’s Benefit
You may also qualify if you are on a Community Employment Scheme, a Back to Work Scheme, a Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme or a Community Employment Development Programme.
The scheme does not cover sight tests for driving licences or VDUs. If you do need glasses or contacts, the Department will contribute towards the costs. Generally, the contribution is made towards glasses. Contributions are generally only made towards contacts if there is a medical necessity to use them instead of glasses.
How to apply:
You will need to fill out form O1 (form O2 if you are a dependent spouse, civil partner or cohabitant). Forms are available from your optician, local Social Welfare Services office or the Treatment Benefit Section.
