Feel good highs

Surfing exotic locations, snowboarding, diving the oceans, skydiving, kayaking rivers, biking, etc...

Article by : SpunOut.ie

There's never been a better time in history to do what you want, when you want to. I have found the greatest highs are natural highs and most often found in the great outdoors. With advances in technology we are now able to ride the forces of nature in so many different ways. Surfing exotic locations, snowboarding, diving the oceans, skydiving, kayaking rivers, biking, etc...

We live in a high pressure society and our need to escape and “let off steam” in our free time is more important than ever. The manner in which we do this has major implications for our health and quality of life.

Physical exercise releases the brain’s natural opiates. The release of natural endorphins is addictive. Runners get hooked on running because it makes them feel good, surfers get hooked on surfing because it gives them a “buzz” and equally a feeling of peace.

Part of the impulse is the in-the-moment at-oneness we experience during such activities. These states signal heightened neural/mental events. There are many routes to heightened attention and a sense of profound well-being. Finding this through interaction with our natural environment can be one of the most rewarding. Such pursuits benefit our health and can have a positive effect on our quality of life, as well as broadening our horizons.

In Ireland we're lucky enough to have some world class breaks for surfing and windsurfing, prolific white water for kayaking and spectacular mountains for climbing. After an initial expense the cost is minimal. There is a growing number of young people who seek this natural high and many clubs and organizations are available to give free advice and help for interested parties.

We must move away from a society where the future generation is seeking solace in alcohol and drugs. Where the 'need for speed' is resulting in the unnecessary death of hundreds each year.

So you choose, your life, your style, your experience, life is an adventure!
