Societies and clubs
Get in the know about student societies and clubs.
Societies are one of the most worthwhile aspects of college life to get involved in. You will make great friends, become a lot more informed and confident and enjoy free wine aplenty. There will undoubtedly be plenty of societies that interest you whether it’s political discussion, business, ecology or chocolate appreciation! Societies attract exciting guest speakers as well as often organizing seriously cheap trips away.
Clubs are also a really great feature of college life. Whether or not you are a seasoned sportsperson there’s a club for everyone. Beginning college is one of the best chances you’ll get to take up a new sport or get fit again after slogging away at the Leaving Cert. Clubs are a really economical way to keep healthy as they are usually heavily subsidized by the college meaning you will have only have to pay a minimum fee. It’s easy when starting college to get a bit unhealthy drinking a good bit and not eating the best foods so a bit of rowing or even fencing will help no end!
Another worthwhile activity in college is volunteering. With the amount of graduates with good degrees nowadays, employers often look for people with something different to offer. You can often arrange volunteering through a society in college and even get a cert in recognition of your efforts.
Many colleges offer language courses which are open to students and are a great chance to keep up your language(s) from secondary school if you’ve pursued a course without the option to study languages. You could even earn a Cert or Diploma which will stand to you in years to come when job-hunting.
If you fancy yourself as the next Roisin Ingle or Fintan O’Toole you should check out the college newspaper where you might get the chance to write a column, review an album or research an article. Part of the fun of college-life is having the time to try out new things like new languages and sports and through this to discover hidden talents.
