Homesickness

Leaving home isn't all fun and games.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

For many, college or university is their first time living away from the family. So much is unfamiliar that a feeling of 'you'd be better off back home' can quickly creep in.

  • Remind yourself that it's totally natural to miss your home. It's cosy and familiar, unlike the new place, but it won't be like that forever. If you’re feeling particularly homesick, take comfort in the fact that you can always go back for a weekend any time you like.
  • Talk to someone about what you're going through, whether it's your new friends (who are likely going through something similar), family back home, or your student welfare officer. It might sound a bit corny, but getting problems out in the open can often make you feel better about everything.
  • Stay in touch with old friends. It's good to hear a familiar voice over the phone.
  • Aim to make the most of any social opportunities in your new area. Meeting new people will help make you feel that you're not alone.
  • You should start to settle in and make new friends during the first months at college or uni. However if you feel like things aren’t going well, you’re stressed or with serious money problems then speak to one of your lecturers or a campus counsellor. Your student’s union will have information on who can help get you out of a sticky spot.

Another way to deal with homesickness: bring a bunch of old photos, and look at them every now and then!
