Student Guide to Dublin
First in a five part series of the main student cities.
Whether you’re a new student looking for the good spots, or a friend taking time off their lecture schedule to visit newly situated friends in the student capital; make the most of your time in the big city. Be it the nightlife, the markets, the shopping, or the city sites, there’s something for even the pickiest of youthful tastes.
The main attraction for most of the student population tends to be the vast array of pubs and clubs, where students can socialise and indulge in a cold alcoholic beverage or four. The options are endless, though most tend to flock to the growing number of clubs participating in student friendly prices.
If hardcore rocking is your scene, then take a trip to Fibber McGee’s, Dublin’s best known rock bar on a Thursday. Here you can indulge in any drink imaginable for just three euro! If you’re into a slightly mellower sound, head to C U Next Tuesday at the Crawdaddy, where there’s a choice of numerous rooms and indie electro sounds to get you moving. Crawdaddy also features great drinks promotions every week.
If it’s live music you’re into, then the POD never disappoints as one of the city’s hot-spots for up and comings. In fact, some may recall Florence and The Machine playing there to just twelve people.
Next, why not take a stroll to the Twisted Pepper on Abbey Street to witness one of the most eclectic venues of the city? Sheebeen Chic, George’s Street, is another one that is not for the faint hearted. On a busy night sweat drips from the walls, and the loud music provides a nice foil for the relatively placid ground level bar. Anything from surf-pop to ska-punk is featured here, providing a guaranteed interesting mix of people and some good time fun.
If you like all things wonderful and quirky, you’re sure to fit right into the Dublin market scene. If you’re into the latest vintage trend, take a look at the monthly flea market in Newmarket that provides great free music, entertainment and arts mixed with the hustling bustling market atmosphere. It boasts a cheap and cheerful day out, and that’s not to mention the amazing finds you may stumble upon.
If you are looking for something different in the city confines, why not delve into the atmospheric paradise that is the indoor markets of Georges Street Arcade? A much loved landmark amongst Dubliners and visitors alike, you can’t help but love its unique shopping atmosphere and special Dublin warmth. See something different every week and take time out from the vast array of student bars trying to usher you in. See what our pretty little country has to offer. You might even enjoy it.
Take a walk up to James Street and enter the Guinness Storehouse at St James’s Gate Brewery for some Irish history and a pint of the black stuff. Or maybe check out some of the nations favourite stars portraits captured in wax in Temple Bar’s National Wax museum. If all that’s not enough, get yourself to one of the three Dublin located sections of the National Museums. You can visit the Archaeology, Art and History, or the Natural History section.
Wherever your interest lies, all of these places have something unique to offer, not to mention student friendly prices. Whatever you decide to do and see, one thing is for sure, there’s nothing short of a good time to be had.
