X-hale Youth Awards
Youth opp: Tackling smoking with creativity.
The Irish Cancer Society (IRC) is now accepting applications for their X-HALE Youth Awards grant scheme and YOU can sign up.
The scheme focuses on smoking in the community, and allows young people to explore issues related to it, such as health, pollution and even finances. It aims to empower young people to undertake projects around the issue of smoking and to support them in the development of anti smoking projects in their community.
The scheme allows young people to:
- Work with others to share knowledge and experience.
- Encourage themselves and their communities to advocate for smoke free environments in their community and country.
- Learn about and create tobacco free advertising campaigns.
- Work on the issue of smoking in youth groups.
- Educate their communities about the dangers of smoking.
The Awards scheme operates at three levels:
- Local Level: Local grants are given to community groups to help them develop community education campaigns. The grants are used to produce local events/showcases.
- Regional Level: Groups who receive this award will participate in skills-based workshops, relevant to their project. Their training will be provided by the Irish Cancer Society.
- National Level: Groups who receive this award will bring their final project to a national showcase event to highlight their achievements and to raise awareness of the issue. It aims to encourage other young people to take action also. The national showcase event will take place in late October during the mid-term break.
Applications for funding are now welcome from community groups, youth clubs, youth projects, youth organisations and local sporting organisations. The Irish Cancer Society is also keen to get joint application from groups who would like to develop a partnership with other groups in their community.
The awards range from €500 to a maximum of €5,000
The money can used for research, youth project work, project materials and for part payment of worker’s salaries. A maximum of 15% of the award may be allowed for management and administration costs. Each recipient will be required to give a detailed breakdown of where there funds will be spent.
If all this sounds really interesting and like something you would like to get involved in, please visit the Irish Cancer Society’s website for further details and an application form. The closing date for applications is the 5th of January 2012.
