Why alcohol is popular
Youth voice on why people drink.
Alcohol is a drug. However, in Ireland it is a socially acceptable drug. In other words most people think it is okay to drink. And there is nothing wrong with alcohol; it is perfectly okay to drink (if you are over 18). In small quantities it may even be good for your health. The trouble starts when people don't know their limits or use alcohol for the wrong reasons. It can lead to all sorts of problems. (Some after just one nights excessive drinking).
Things that can happen when you are drunk:
1 You can get into fights.
2 You can become vulgar.
3 You can have accidents.
4 You can become careless.
5 Your judgement is impaired.
6 You can have unprotected sex.
7 You can become unaware of dangers around you.
8 Your personal safety is more at risk.
So why drink?
• Self confidence
• Escape from troubles
• Helps to relax
• Overcome shyness
• Good craic
• The buzz of getting it in the first place
There are benefits to staying sober. Here are a few:
• You can still have a good laugh
• You can remember the "good night"
• You stay awake
• It's a cheap night
• You don't have to creep in
• Clean shoes!
