Headshopping

Get the facts!

Since there are still a good few head shops around Ireland; Spunout.ie thought it was time we stepped in and provided some info on ‘em. Head shops seem to invite everything from scaremongering to blind worship, so a more balanced view is essential.

What is a headshop?
A head shop is a shop that sells legal herbs and other substances designed to give a high or a lift to a person. They also sell drug paraphernalia such as bongs, weighing scales, pipes, rolling papers and magazines. Some shops sell sex toys and condoms also.

What’s the history of headshops?
It is thought that the first headshops originated in the US during the 1960’s, with flower power, peace and love in full effect. The original headshops grew out of poster or candle stores, and provided a place where people could purchase psychadelic products, as well alternative music and clothing.

What age do you have to be to buy products in a headshop?
You must be 18 or over to buy products in a headshop.

Are they legal?

Up until very recently, they seemed to be less restricted than other mood altering substances such as cigarettes or alcohol.

However, the government started to rethink legal highs and in June 2010 banned various substances sold in headshops, under the Misuse of Drugs Act. The substances outlawed are: synthetic cannabinoids (AKA ‘Spice’ products), BZP derivatives, Mephedrone (AKA ‘Snow’ or ‘Blow’), Methlyone and related cathinones; Ketamine, GBL (AKA Liquid Ecstasy), Tapentadol and others.

The new Psychoactive Substances Bill allows Gardaí to seek a court order to close head shops suspected of selling drug-like products, with the onus on the owners to prove they are not involved in such activities.
