Questions for landlords

Don't get caught out by hidden costs or other problems in your new home.

Ask the following questions when you’re checking out any potential accommodation:

  • How much is the rent and does each person pay separately or do we pay a fixed amount for the house? (Ask for a rent book and find out if you pay weekly or monthly).
  • How much is the deposit and do I need to pay rent in advance? (Get a receipt for any money paid at the start)
  • What are the conditions for getting my deposit back?
  • What happens if one flatmate leaves? Will we have to pay their rent? Who will be responsible for finding a new person?
  • How much notice do you give before leaving?
  • What extra bills are there? Are the paid by meter or bill? Who’s name is on the bill?
  • What sort of heating is there? How much does it cost to heat the house in winter?
  • How do the hot water and shower work?
  • Is it easy for me to travel from uni to here?
  • Is it a safe area?
  • Does the house have smoke alarms and a fire escape?
  • Can you have friends staying over? Are pets allowed?
