Ending a tenancy

Know your rights about notices, leases, and deposits.

Moving house or leaving a flat is stressful enough, but when your landlord won’t give you your deposit back, it can make things even more stressful.

It’s especially difficult if you feel that you did nothing wrong and that the place is spick and span.

The housing organisation Threshold, reports that they are contacted by thousands of people every year who find themselves in this very pickle. So, they have put together a list of tips to try and help renters reduce the chances of their landlords running off with their deposits.

Such tips include

  • Taking photographs of every room when you move in, so that the landlord can’t say that you damaged rooms or areas.
  • Giving appropriate notice when you are leaving.
  • Keeping a record of all rent payments.
