Homeless support for non-Irish nationals
New service for non-Irish nationals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Threshold, the national housing organisation, has just set up a service to give support and information to homeless non nationals living in Ireland.
This service is open to any non national who is currently homeless OR could be at risk of becoming homeless. Threshold aims to help secure accommodation in Ireland for these groups.
The position of the Non National Liaison Officer was set up in June and his duties are solely related to helping non nationals. Mainly the Liaison Officer works with those that are not homeless yet, but are at risk of becoming so. He tries to help any non national with housing issues and works with those who are being threatened and manipulated by landlords. Often, tenants are unaware that their landlord is acting in an illegal manner and do not know their rights. Many tenants for example, do not realise that they are entitled to their deposits back when they leave a rented house.
The Liaison Officer also works with those who live in sub standard accommodation. These people are not technically homeless, but the quality of their homes is very low. This is very bad for their physical and mental health.
Threshold also works with other organisations such as MABS.
The liaison officer with Threshold offers support by:
- Providing easy to understand, up to date info on housing and ways to access suitable accommodation.
- Referring clients to other services if they need further help.
- Advocating on client’s behalf to Local Authorities, Community Welfare Officers and other statutory bodies.
- Helping clients who want to take a case to the Private Residential Tenancies Board.
