The main problems facing most would-be writers are the questions: what is good writing and how do I go about it? Good writing is not about showing off your perfect grammar or the big words you know. It's not about following some literary snob’s notion of a correct way in which to write. There is no such thing as a correct way to write just as there is no such thing as a correct accent or fashion dress code. These are only notions that insecure people invent to make themselves feel better than you!

The key to good writing is effective communication. Writing well is about using persuasion and/ or information to get a message across. An effective way to do this is to put your points across first and then back them up with facts and information you have researched and collected. Good writing skills mean getting the point across clearly, providing information in a way the reader will understand and making a strong case that includes your own thoughts.

Start writing

Step#1 Just do it!

You will find 100 reasons not to write, ranging from a lack of time to a question of self-belief. Most writers have to overcome these at some point. You will feel a lot better once you sit down and just start writing! Remember you don’t need to be Roddy Doyle or JK Rowling, at least not at first!

Step#2 Choose a subject

You have to find the balance between writing about things you have a passion for and issues and interests that concern others whether they know it or not yet!

Step#3 Sketch your ideas

Brainstorm your ideas and make notes of your main points. Think of a catchy title to help focus your thoughts. You can change it later if need be.

Step#4 Preparation is the key

Get your ideas and main points down quickly as there will be plenty of time to revise and edit later. Then ask yourself “would my article benefit from including a few facts or some quotes?” The internet, reliable broadsheet newspapers and your local library are good sources for facts. A notebook, pen and questions will help get you quotes!

Step#5 Get off to a good start

Use the first paragraph and especially your opening sentence to grab the reader’s attention. If you are covering a news story then make sure to cover: Who? What?, Where?, When? Why?, How?

Step#6 Write in style

Each of us has a unique way of looking at the world and this should come across naturally in your writing. Be yourself and don’t be overly conscious of what others might think. Remember that you’re the one making the effort! The main thing is to be original.

Step#7 Keep structure and flow

Use the first two paragraphs to make your essential points. You can use the following two paragraphs to back up your main points and add facts, personal comments or quotes. Your concluding paragraph should act like a summary and leave an impression on the reader. Then ask yourself, “Did I get my main point across?” If the answer is yes then you’re on your way! A useful tip is to write the first draft with your heart and the second draft with your head.

Step#8 Chopping and changing

It’s now time for your first proof read. Read over and change words and expression where necessary. Make sure your article reads quickly and easily from paragraph to paragraph. If you have any long-winded or boring sentences, cut, cut, cut! At this stage it is a good idea to leave your work down and return to it in a few hours time or the next day.

Step#9 The finishing touches

When you return for a second proof read, you should find the article has taken shape. Now read it out aloud. Check for clear meaning, correct tense (grammar) and spelling errors. Get someone you trust to check it and encourage them to give you positive criticism.

Step#10 Showtime!

You’ve drafted your ideas, written your piece, proofed, corrected and proofed again. Now it’s time to send it on to SpunOut.ie and enjoy the buzz of seeing a piece of your own writing published.
