Be brief and to the point

  • Keep in mind that a lot of web users use the Internet to chat, browse or find out about something quickly. Most of what web users need to know about a topic can be covered in one web pages. An average web page contains between 500 and 600 words.

  • A useful guideline is to organise your article into 5 paragraphs, leaving room for reference notes after the main text.

Use links to further info

  • The great thing about writing on the Internet is that you can link extra information related to your topic.

  • Simply list the links after your main text. When you submit your article the crew at SpunOut will then sort it out. This allows you much greater freedom to cover key points and cuts down a whole pile of time trying to cram everything into one article!

Be clear and focused

  • Use an introduction to let web readers know what’s in your article.

  • Give them the information you set out to provide. Make sure the main points are clearly expressed.

Prepare your opening paragraph

  • Your first paragraph should introduce your topic and draw readers in so that they will want to read on.

Prepare main-frame

  • It’s a good idea to decide on 3 or 4 main points that you want to get across in your article. Then take each point and expand it into a separate paragraph.

The wrap up paragraph

  • Your 5th and final paragraph should conclude your article and include a quick review, call to action or follow up advice depending on what topic you’ve covered.

Add links and reference info

  • After the concluding paragraph, list any references, interviewees or additional links that are necessary for SpunOut.ie staff editing your article and which may be important for readers who want to follow up on information you’ve given them.

Revise and edit

  • Remember: include points, facts and details that are relevant and necessary to your article. Leave out those that aren't! Use the word count to check that your article is between 200 and 600 words.
