Five groups recently applied for the right to run the new youth radio station for the west and north west, due to be up and running from 2007. It’s something we’ve been following very closely for quite some time here at SpunOut Towers.

So, what are the competitors like, and what are the chances of them providing the service for which we’re all hoping?

There are some powerful people involved in the various bids, including the owner of Supermacs, one of Ireland’s biggest pop impresario, U2’s accountant and a former advisor to Mary Harney, as well as highly experienced heads from such current radio stations as Ocean FM, Red FM, Spin 1038, Mid-West Radio and Newstalk. Crikey…

With all those different names floating around, you might expect the five applications to be markedly different, but in reality they share numerous features. For instance, apparently news on the hour ain’t cool no more, with four of the five stations proposing to have hourly news bulletins at either quarter to or ten to the hour. There’s also a big focus on mid-morning music, which would go against the unwritten rule of radio that mid-morning = magazine type shows. Interestingly, every one of the applications intends to broadcast the Irish Language Top 40 Chart…
