Your future TD's...the dubs

A Dublin constituency guide.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Dublin Central:

This is Bertie town but it’s unlikely he’ll take another FFer in with him. Tony Gregory is also safe and Joe Costello should be okay for Labour. That brings it down to Mary Lou McDonald, MMR denier Green Patricia McKenna and FG’s Paschal Donohue for the last seat.

Dublin North

With three sitting TD’s retiring, this is set to be an exciting battle with new faces a real possibility. Green leader Trevor Sargent is safe, while a plethora of FF councillors, FG’s Dr James Reilly and Socialist Clare Daly are also hopeful.

Dublin North Central

The group of death and for good reason. The constituency has lost a seat, and Finian McGrath will hope to keep his seat, but with two strong Fáilers in Haughey and Callely, and Richard Bruton, something has to give.

Dublin North-West

A three-seater, Dublin North-West sees Noel Ahern and Pat Carey of FF battle with Labour’s Roisin Shorthall and Dessie Ellis of Sinn Fein. It looks like Ellis will take a seat off FF.

Dublin North-East

FF have two seats here: Michael Woods and Martin Brady, the remaining seat belongs to Labour’s Tommy Broughan. PD Keith Redmond from that Sensodyne ad hopes that the people will elect a man who’s made a career out of putting sharp things in people’s mouths, while Brody Sweeney from O’Brien’s Sandwich bars is running for FG.

Dublin South

A five seater, Dublin South should be among the handful of constituencies that are representative of the election battle as a whole. FF’s two candidates are safe, as are Olivia Mitchell and Eamon Ryan. It’ll be a battle then between Liz O’Donnell (PD), Alan Shatter (FG) and a strong Labour challenge.

Dublin South Central

Gay Mitchell’s retiring and keeping a FG seat could be tough. Could be one of the few places in the country where Labour take two seats, with Mary Upton and Eric Byrne looking good. Aengus O’Snodaigh is assured a seat for SF and FF could be down to a solitary seat, which would not be good in a five seater.

Dublin South-East

Too many strong candidates, not enough spaces. One of the few places in the country where FF could emerge without a seat, as Michael McDowell (boo!), Lucinda Creighton (rarr!) Ruairi Quinn and John Gormley (yay?) take on Chris Andrews for the four seats.

Dublin South-West

Pat Rabbitte should top the poll but after that it’s anybody’s guess. Sean Crowe should be okay, but then it’s between FG’s Brian Hayes, and FF’s Charlie O’Connor and Conor Lenihan for the other two.

Dublin West

Three seats up for grabs here, which considering the large population is pretty controversial. Brian Lenihan and Joe Higgins are safe, and the fight for the last is between Labour’s Joan Burton and FG’s Leo Varadkar.

Dublin Mid-West

Only that the constituency has gained a seat, Mary Harney would be screwed and even though she’ll be re-elected it will still be very tight. Both FF’s John Curran and Green Paul Gogarty are okay, so the final should be between Labour’s Joanna Tuffy and FG’s Frances Fitzgerald.

Dún Laoghaire:

Formerly a FG stronghold, they have no seats here at the minute. They’ll gain at least one seat, who that will be though is uncertain yet. FF’s Mary Hanafin and Barry Andrews are one of their best tickets in the country and will sail through, as will Eamon Gilmore and Ciaran Cuffe from Labour and the Greens respectively. Poor likeable Fiona O’Malley looks likely to lose.
