Where do you stand on the Yes No campaign
Barnardos sticking up for the rights of little people.
Barnardos is a children’s charity set up to advocate for the rights of children and to ensure that every child has the childhood he or she is entitled to. Poverty can destroy children, their families and their future, so Barnardos campaigns for ways to end poverty and to help build systems and supports that will help even the most disadvantaged child reach their potential.
What is this campaign all about?
Barnardos are currently running a Yes/No campaign. Times are tough and the recession has directly impacted many children and their families, and Barnardos feels that this needs to be tackled now. During the Celtic Tiger boom times, Ireland did not implement good social welfare, educational or health strategies, so now that a recession has hit us, Ireland does not have any good supports in place. This means many children are suffering all over this country on a daily basis, no matter how hard their parents are trying to keep things together.
Barnardos Ireland is saying YES to:
- A fairer deal for the most vulnerable children in our society
- More effective public services
- A chance to learn, to grow, to live
- Excess and unsold properties to be used to house families instead of sitting there unused. This would make a large dent in the social housing waiting list.
- Disadvantaged schools to receive more finding and support, along with ensuring that all children who need a special needs assistant are allocated one.
Barnardos Ireland is saying NO to:
- 76,000 children living in consistent poverty
- Budget cuts for disadvantaged children
- To a hard life made unbearable
- Child benefit or one parent family benefit cuts
