Ireland tops the booze spending league
A new European Commisson report says that Irish people spend a bigger proportion of our income on booze than any other EU country. It also states that we are the biggest binge drinkers in the EU. It claims that we spend three times more money on alcohol than any other country and ten times more than Greece.
As with previous reports, the EC report claims young people in Ireland are the biggest binge drinkers in Europe with 32% of 15 and 16-year-olds having binge drunk three or more times in a month. The Dutch come second on the table with 28%.
The average Irish household spends on average €1,675 per year on drink whilst the Danes spend followed by Denmark which spends €531. Campaign group Alcohol Action Ireland said that the report showed that alcohol consumption needed to be addressed urgently.
So is this news to us? Haven't we heard it all before? Sure are we not the best craic in Europe? Or perhaps we're being charged way more than anyone else?
