Oxegen 2006

Adventures and...Polka Dot Novelty Boots

Article by : SpunOut.ie

This year it promises to be bigger than ever, with major artists and musical treats for all tastes. I was not lucky enough to get a ticket in time myself. (Well, they did sell out after about...hmmm...two microseconds! Maybe I'm exaggerating...just a little bit...)

However, people I know who are going have informed me of the vast list of musicians who will be playing at Oxegen. James Brown, Republic of Loose, Richard Ashcroft, Editors, Eels, Death Cab for Cutie, José Gonzalez, Franz Ferdinand, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, the Charlatans and Gemma Hayes make up the small scattering of cherries on the enormous iced cake with many layers    of lavish and talented music makers.

The campers are all set, by now, to embark on this fun-filled journey of music, madness and flamboyant polka dot novelty boots and/or old khaki wellies.  I can only dare to dream about it! Well, everyone will paint a few watercoloured wild pictures about it when they get back, I'm sure! As I write this, their tents are pitched. One-Two. Testing. The crowd is waiting in anticipation and exhilaration as their idols prepare to perform for them. The atmosphere is invigorating and ignited with sparks of excitement, laden with zealous fans. There will also be cinema screens and parties. Catching forty winks? Hmmm…try five maybe.

There's no time for sleep when your hero/heroine is making magic with their instruments, crazy costumes, silky/husky/just plain loud voices and in the case of new singer Lily Allen- a lot of red eyeshadow and gold jewelry should cast a spell over her fellow Londoners visiting.

So, even though the usually trustworthy skateboards and rollerblades were used, I did not make it in time to clutch that precious shiny blue ticket to this fascinating world of Rock n' Roll/Pop/Alternative... Stuff.

And even though I did not arrive at the much-coveted destination, just like many others, I vow to reach the promised land that is Punchestown next year. Hey, that's a pretty strong oath to take. I'd better stick to my guns then so! Meanwhile, the good old iPod will see me through...
