Famine walk 09

Take part in the Famine walk to highlight human rights and justice issues.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

The annual Afri famine walk is a walk of remembrance and resistance. It remembers those who died as a result of famine in Ireland in the 1840s and those who are condemned to lives of indebtedness and poverty in today’s world.

Afri’s first ‘Famine Walk’ took place in 1988, with the aim of linking the experience of Ireland in the 1840s with contemporary issues of famine, hunger, food insecurity and human rights abuses. Since the first famine walk, Afri have taken up themes of injustice in the Philippines, in Central America, South Africa and East Timor and have publicised the exploitation of the Mayan people in Guatemala and of banana Workers in Belize; the legacy of colonialism and the rights of Migrant Workers. Their campaigns have featured themes such as ‘Land for People not for Profit’; ‘Erris, Gas and global Warming’; ‘Water, Oil, Weapons: resources and conflict at home and abroad’; and, this year, ‘Power Concedes Nothing without Demand’.

About Afri:
Afri is a group of committed and creative people who seek to promote debate and influence policy and practice in Ireland and internationally. Afri, in particular, responds to injustice in the world caused by war and other violent conflict.
