EIL travel grants competition

Looking for a big adventure? Want to get out there and experience the world? Then the EIL challenge aware might just be the thing for you.

If you are interested in world affairs and would like to experience another culture in depth, then check out the 14 fully funded and 8 partially funded EIL awards.

Fully funded awards for people between the ages of 16-18:

  • Japan – Spend six weeks living in Japan with a Japanese host family. Learn the language, experience the culture and go to a Japanese secondary school.
  • Ecuador – Live with an Ecuadorian family for four weeks. Learn Spanish, visit the rainforest, hike, ride horses and volunteer at a local communard project.

Awards for those over the age of 18:

  • Mexico – Spend six weeks helping a turtle care co-op with their sustainable source of income.
  • Argentina –Help out at a local project for the poor children of Chilecito. You will need a lot of energy and initiative for this project.

Group awards:

  • Honk Kong – Visit universities and school and take part in community activities. Then help host the delegation when they arrive in Ireland. This award is for four people between the ages of 17 and 22.

Other awards:

  • DEIS/Youthreach students – Four places are available for the Honk Kong exchange programme
  • ACCESS/Mature students – Spend two months on a volunteer abroad programme. There are three ACCESS places and one mature student place.
  • Secondary school in Germany Scholarship – Two scholarships are available for this opp. You would live with a German family and attend a German Secondary school.
  • Global Awareness Programme – Four people are needed for this AIDS awareness and education programme, which takes place in both Africa and in Ireland.

EIL criteria:

  • EIL accept all applications but those with volunteer or community involvement experience will take priority over those with academic qualifications.
  • The awards are open to anyone form the age of 16 years onwards
  • You must be available to travel over the summer months

How to apply:

  • Go to the EIL website and click on the award you are interested in. This will then take you to an application form, which you must fill in and return to EIL.
  • You can apply for more than one award, but you must complete a separate application for each.
  • You must be nominated by a teacher or ACCESS administrator for the ACCESS and DEIS awards.
  • The deadline is 5pm on the 25th of March 2011.
