Burma Action Ireland
Campaign to free Burma's political prisoners.
Burma Action Ireland has launched a new campaign - Free Burma's Political Prisoners Now!
This is part of a global campaign aiming to collect 888,888 signatures calling for the release of all political prisoners in Burma before the planned 2010 elections.
There are over 2,100 political prisoners in Burma, including the Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Political prisoners in Burma come from all walks of life, from students, to Internet bloggers, to human rights activists. The political prisoners are often imprisoned and tortured for simply expressing their opinion in protest of the repressive and inhuman military regime in Burma.
Burma Action Ireland is asking everyone to get involved by signing the petition, encouraging others to sign or even by gathering signatures themselves in their college, workplace or community: In Ireland we have freedom of opinion and assembly and we can and should use these freedoms to help others who are not so fortunate. Aung San Suu Kyi has asked people to “use your freedom to promote ours” and this is a simple way to do just that.
