UNICEF's latest campaigns
Grinding a halt to the cycle of child poverty.
UNICEF is a children’s charity dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world. The charity works to improve health outcomes, decrease or eliminate child labour and improve education for children around the world.
It has a number of campaigns up and running at the moment.
What are these campaigns all about?
Believe in Zero:
UNICEF wants to put an end to the completely unnecessary deaths of children around the globe, who die from preventable causes such as unclean water, malaria, measles or malnutrition. Currently, 24,000 children die each day from preventable causes such as this and UNICEF wants to reduce this number to 0.

Net Result:
Malaria is one of the primary causes of childhood death. The best prevention of malaria is not vaccinations or tablets, but simple nets, which can be used to stop insects getting access to children at all. It costs just €14 to buy three insecticide treated nets, which will keep a family of six safe for about five years.
UNICEF Ireland wants to send 10,000 nets to malaria hot spots around the world.
UNITE For Children, UNITE Against AIDS:
In 2005, UNICEF launched this campaign as a call to action for all those working with children suffering from HIV/AIDS. This campaign wants the next generation to be AIDS free. An ambitious target; but one that has to be set, to try and halt the spread of HIV and AIDS.
This campaign is focusing on these goals:
- Preventing mother to child transmission during labour. The aim is to have 80% of infected women receive safe medical care during labour.
- Providing treatment to 80% of children with HIV/AIDS.
- Prevention of infection among adolescents and young people. Reducing the amount of young people living with HIV/AIDS by 25%.
- Supporting and protecting children and young people with HIV/AIDS.
Schools for Africa:
This campaign was set up to promote education and schooling in Africa. The campaign is a collaboration between UNICEF, The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society for the Promotion of Democracy and International Law. The aim of the campaign is to give access to education for all children; but especially females, orphans and other vulnerable children.
In Sub Saharan Africa for example, 45 million children do not go to school. This lack of education continues the cycle of poverty.
This campaign supports the construction of schools, assists with training programmes for teachers as well as providing essential schooling items such as blackboards, books, pens and benches.
