The Slow Food Movement

Connections between plate and planet.

Article by : SpunOut.ie - Rating :

“Being a Slow Food member is a self-fulfilling prophecy because as the saying goes, if ‘We are what we eat, who wants to be fast, cheap and easy!”

What is the Slow Food Movement?

Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organisation that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. (Say that quickly 3 times… no wait... say it slowly!)

The connections between plate and planet

Slow Food is good, clean and fair food. Slow Foodies believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.

Slow Foodies consider themselves co-producers, not consumers. By being informed about how our food is produced and actively supporting those who produce it, they believe that we become a part of and a partner in the production process.

To do that, Slow Food brings together pleasure and responsibility, and makes them inseparable. Today, the Slow Food Movement has over 100,000 members in 132 countries.

Gourmands and growers on a mission

  • To defend biodiversity
Slow Food believes the enjoyment of excellent food and drink should be combined with efforts to save the countless traditional grains, vegetables, fruits, animal breeds and food products that are disappearing due to the prevalence of convenience food and industrial agribusiness.
  • To spread Taste Education
By reawakening and training our senses, Slow Food aims to help people rediscover the joys of eating and understand the importance of caring where their food comes from, who makes it and how it’s made. They hold cool activities like guided tastings, school gardens, and much more!
  • To link Producers and Co-producers

Ahhh, how we all love the sights, sound,s and of course, tastes of our local market! Slow Food organises fairs, markets and events locally and internationally to showcase products of excellent gastronomic quality and to offer hungry heads like us the opportunity to meet producers.
